Every half term we run the Festival of Football for young children between ages of 7 – 12 years old. However this October, we received more children below the ages of 7 years old; this allowed us to have a young age group football session run alongside our target group. The younger children enjoyed getting used to the football through dribbling and shooting drills/games.
As usual our target age groups were energetic and ready to go from Monday till Friday. Even on Thursday, one young person had a great suggestion, ‘next half term, make sure we play on Saturday’. It made the coaches laugh and upon reflection, it shows that our aims at Sunderland Samba to see young people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds come together and build community through football is truly in play. Not only this but the children enjoy it too with a learning environment providing plenty of opportunities to take part in singing, dancing and playing the African drums during intervals.
Being able to work with young children to break down barriers and work with each other no matter the abilities or disabilities has been one of the most rewarding experiences for Sunderland Samba. Hence we cannot wait for the next half term to have this wonderful group of young people back again. At the end of the week we received an email from a parent which perhaps best sums up the whole week, ‘I would like to say thank you to you and all the team. The boys have really had a great week and really enjoyed the football’.
